Stoney Point Park – an Unexpected Neighborhood Discovery

A couple of months ago, I was absolutely sure that Chatsworth, a suburban neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, could not surprise me with any new discoveries. Having lived in the area at one point, I had plenty of opportunities to explore the place and its surroundings.

Their natural landscapes and relative peacefulness have always fascinated me. But I was not expecting to stumble upon something as interesting as Stoney Point Park. This remarkable Los Angeles City park I had yet to explore.

Visit Stoney Point Park

Located near 118 Freeway, Stoney Point Park, or also known as the Stoney Point Outcroppings, promises an epic adventure. Massive boulders pile on top of each other to create a rocky mountain with a series of trails and climbing routes.

So naturally, the raw beauty of the park has attracted the film industry for years and was featured in many Hollywood movies. This probably was not the last reason why the area was recognized as one of the most scenic parks in LA.

In 2007, the 81-acre Stoney Point area was expanded. It included an equestrian center that sits right at the bottom of the “mount”. Every spring since the acquisition, the park has hosted the Annual Chatsworth Day of the Horse Festival. Yet abundant climbing opportunities is what allures locals and visitors to the rocky outcroppings.

Things to Do at Stoney Point Park

Standing at the bottom of the mountain, you have to choose what you want to do. Do you want to stay at the sea level and hike or ride a horse along the well-trodden trails or reach for the summit to admire spectacular panoramas from above?

Hiking at the Foothill

The park has a few trails that meander at the foot of the Stoney Point outcroppings. Short and fairly easy, they suit people of all fitness levels, including kids. The unpaved trails, however, don’t accommodate wheelchairs and strollers.

Rock Climbing

The best way to enjoy Stoney Point Park is by climbing up its rocky “trails” or mastering your mountaineering skills on nearly sheer faces of gigantic boulders. As you stray from a few noticeable trails and explore the rocks on your own, you may see many other climbing enthusiasts.

Stoney Point Park has a long history of attracting rock climbers who use the enormous rocks to practice the sport of bouldering. Near the foothills, beginners with climbing teachers train on the lower-elevation rocks while the higher-elevation boulders are the realm of the advanced climbers.

The most adventurous visitors attempt to conquer the sheer cliff of Stoney Point, a massive boulder at the top of the mountain.

Cave Exploring

Many outdoor lovers can easily explore Stoney Point Park’s caves and alcoves. These were created by the boulders clustering near and on top of each other in an irregular manner. The hollows spread across lower and upper elevations.

Admiring Views

When you make all the way to the top of the rocky mountain, find a city-facing boulder, and admire the views. On a clear day, you can enjoy the striking vistas of Chatsworth, Coyote Pass, the Santa Susana Mountains, and the San Fernando Valley.
